HIPAA

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996.  HIPAA was designed to streamline healthcare transactions, uphold patients’ rights to privacy, and establish national standards for electronic health care transactions.

One of the most important functions of HIPAA was to address the security and privacy of electronic health data.  All medical data must be secure and adhere to the highest standards of patient and physician privacy.  Medical practices must implement administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to ensure that standard of security.
